Becoming Creative

We all wish we were a bit more creative. Event managers are also marketers and creators of the story for our event.  At times, creating an original theme or a message that best conveys the products and services can be a struggle. This creative block has encouraged us to seek inspiration in reading. We have compiled a list of five books that may help you gain new insights on innovation and creativity. The bulleted list below each book title represents the main points discussed by the author.

1.  Serious Creativity
     By Edward de Bono

  • Mechanism of thinking
  • Lateral thinking: slow down, go to the new, not old
  • Offer thinking time
  • Creativity is getting thrown off the track and “move” with the idea

2. Rebel Rules
     By Chip Conley

  • Using themes for creativity: dominant, organized principals
  • Exercise: using magazine covers to create ideas and specific designs, elements and costumes for an event

3. Prophets of the Sandlots
     By Mark Winegartner

  • Exercise: using alphabets to innovation. For example: an article on baseball scout: Pick, poor, perform and project.

4. Future Perfect (updated edition)
     By Stan Davis

  • “The present is the past of the future”
  • Innovators have a different time orientation.
  • It already exists, how do we get there?

5. Home: A Short Story of an Idea
     By Witold Rybczynski

  • A brief history of an idea
  • What makes a house into a home -> comfort is the factor

After reading some of these books, we hope that your creativity will be restored and you’ll be on your way to continued success.
