How to Choose the Right Event App

Mobile event applications, while extremely helpful, can be very daunting if you don’t know where to start. Lawrence Coburn, co-founder of DoubleDutch, describes what you should look for when considering an event app. Keep these questions in mind when making your decision:

  1. Is it easy to use? New technology should be user-friendly and efficient. Don’t spend too much time creating or learning an application if the CMS (content management system) is not practical for your needs.
  2. Is it easy for attendees to use? Applications need to be intuitive and engaging enough to promote adoption. If your app is easy to navigate, attendees will check the notifications as often and as easily as they check their emails and text messages.
  3. Is it social? Look for an application that creates a closed social network. Activity feeds and user created content such as photos, comments, and questions create an online community that perfectly complements your event. You’ll get an inside look at attendee engagement and insights.
  4. Is it collecting the right data? Most event apps have the ability to capture clicks, posts, and activity to create useful data analytics. Outline your benchmarks and metrics of success before you shop for an app and come to a decision.
  5. How is the data presented? Check whether or not the information is presented in a way that’s easy to understand. Ask potential app providers how real-time as well as post-event data is organized and reported. Bottom line – make sure you can interpret the data!
