Mandalay Bay to Expand Convention Center

Las Vegas, Nevada is an epicenter for trade shows and world-renowned events. Over the years, Sin City has been home to major trade shows such as The Consumer Electronics Show (CES), CONEXPO-CON/AGG, and a myriad of other consumer goods events. The extensive list of casinos and hotels provide the infrastructure needed  for Las Vegas to host the fast growing lineup of annual events.

Mandalay Bay Hotel & Casino recently announced that their convention center will be expanded by 350,000 square feet. The enormous convention center already boasts 1.7 million square feet. More underground parking and carpeted ballroom space will also be part of the expansion. According to the article, “Mandalay Bay CC Set to Add 350,000 Square Feet of Exhibit Space” by Rachel Wimberly, COO of Mandalay Bay, Chuck Bowling, said the need for additional space was requested by several long-standing customers. To conserve energy, an additional rooftop solar photovoltaic (PV) array will also be included as part of the expansion to make the Mandalay Bay Convention Center the largest array in the world.

The expansion of the will improve the convention center’s national ranking from number 7 to number 5 in overall square footage. Construction is scheduled to begin late fall 2014 with expected completion in January 2016.

With the additional exhibit space, Mandalay Bay CC will top out at 1.1 million sq. ft. of exhibit space and more than 2 million sq. ft. of overall space, upping its North American convention center ranking from No. 7 to No. 5 in overall square feet.

David Loechner, CEO of Emerald Expositions, said, “As a fast growing expositions organizer currently holding 13 annual trade shows in Las Vegas, including four at Mandalay Bay, we are very pleased with the decision to expand and expect to take advantage of the new space as soon as it’s complete.”

Mandalay is the home for several 2013 TSNN Top 250 trade shows, including JCK Las Vegas (No. 33), Cosmoprof North America (No. 103) and Superzoo (No. 112).
