Six Ways to Optimize Your Twitter CTR

Getting people to click through from Twitter to your event’s site or microsite can be a challenge, even if you have an established Twitter following. To generate the highest possible click-through rate (CTR), there are specific things you should do, according to social-media scientist Dan Zarrella of HubSpot, Inc.

Zarella recently analyzed more than 200,000 tweets to come up with some tips for what works and what doesn’t in terms of optimizing Twitter CTR. An EXHIBITOR Q&A response summarizes his six tips.

  1. Write tweets that are between 120 and 130 characters. Longer tweets tell followers more about where your tweet will take them, so they’re more inclined to click through.
  2. Place the link about 25 percent of the way through the tweet. Followers apparently don’t want to wait to find the link at the end. Somewhere around 30 or 35 characters seems to be the best place for a link.
  3. Don’t overdo it. The analysis shows that the Twitter CTR decreases by half when you send two tweets with links within the same hour. It could be tempting to tweet often when you’re at a trade show, but resist the urge.
  4. Use action words more frequently than passive descriptors. The tweets with the highest CTR contain more verbs and adverbs and fewer nouns and adjectives.
  5. Tweet on Saturday and Sunday. Weekends are the time to get the best CTRs. The lowest Twitter CTR days are Monday through Wednesday, probably because people are busy working.
  6. Target your tweets for the end of the day. CTRs increase as the day goes on, with the exception of a little spike between 8 and 9 am.

These tactics are easy to understand and implement. EXHIBITOR suggests keeping them in mind to optimize your Twitter CTR.
